REFRIGERATOR
1974
Oil on canvas
15x28"

Another example of coincidence that I find hard to ignore. Have other painters ever chosen this subject matter? I’m not aware of any.

See CHRISTINE in the EARLY WORK section for elaboration.

I showed this painting to Ivan Karp in ’74 and he said that if I did an entire series of open refrigerator paintings he’d give me a one man show at his gallery, O.K. Harris. At the time OKH was THE gallery in NYC as far as I was concerned!

I’ve never painted another open refrigerator (although I did paint a stovetop), but was reminded of this when I saw Antonio’s in ’86 at the Marlborough Gallery exhibition. Or maybe it was ’90 when the Rizzoli book came out with the painting reproduced. Now that I think about it it probably wasn’t included in the Marlborough show.
